Bethany was a William R. Kenan Graduate Fellow at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before accepting a
postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Human
Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig. She received both the
inaugural Christopher R. Agnew Research Innovation Award and
the Outstanding Research Award from the Society for Personality
and Social Psychology in 2010 for her article on the reciprocal
relationships between social connectedness, positive emotions
and autonomic regulation as expressed in change over time,
which was later published in Biological Psychology. Her
interdisciplinary research addresses social bonds as a regulatory
mechanism of the parasympathetic nervous system.
